AI Chatbot Wars ChatGPT Still King Copilot Rising
Recent data confirms that the global AI chatbot market is overwhelmingly dominated by a single player: OpenAI's ChatGPT. According to new figures, the race for second place is heating up, with Microsoft's Copilot making significant gains.
ChatGPT's Unshakeable Market Dominance
Data provided by StatCounter, based on an analysis of over 3.8 billion monthly page views, shows that ChatGPT currently commands a staggering 80.92% of the market. This near-monopoly position was even stronger earlier in the year, peaking at 84.2% of worldwide usage in April 2025. Despite a minor dip in the following months, its share has remained firmly above the 80% mark, leaving competitors far behind.
This sustained dominance highlights the immense momentum and widespread adoption of OpenAI's platform in the competitive AI chatbot space.
The Challenger Landscape Perplexity vs Copilot
While no one comes close to ChatGPT, the battle for the runner-up position is dynamic. Perplexity, which differentiates itself with research-focused responses and live data integration, was once the clearest challenger. It reached a market share high of 14.1% in March 2025 but has since seen its position slide, settling at 9.0% by August. This trend suggests that unique features alone may not be enough to compete against the scale of a giant like OpenAI.
Meanwhile, Microsoft Copilot has emerged as a formidable contender. Starting from a mere 0.3% in March, Copilot's market share climbed to over 5% by May and has since stabilized in the 4–5% range. This rapid growth is largely attributed to Microsoft's strategy of deeply integrating the AI tool across its popular Office and Windows ecosystems. While still far from the top spot, Copilot's steady ascent positions it as a serious rival to Perplexity and potentially the most credible long-term challenger to ChatGPT's reign.
Other Players in the AI Race
The rest of the market is fragmented among several smaller players struggling to gain a significant foothold. Despite its parent company's vast resources, Google Gemini has seen only modest adoption, with its market share fluctuating between 1.9% and 3.3%. Other platforms like Deepseek saw a late surge to 2.7% in August 2025, while Anthropic's Claude has consistently remained below 1.2%.
The current landscape is one of heavy concentration. ChatGPT is the undisputed leader, Perplexity is working to maintain its relevance, and Microsoft Copilot is methodically closing the gap on the competition.
