The Hidden Dangers of Viral AI Photo Apps

The global rush to adopt the latest viral artificial intelligence (AI) photo trends on social media is fueling a dangerous level of data oversharing, putting users at high risk of identity theft and fraud, a national cybersecurity expert has warned. In the age of ‘fear of missing out' (FOMO), people are flocking to AI-powered apps to transform their pictures into retro, 3D, or other stylish formats. But in doing so, they are handing over vast amounts of personal data that the technology stores indefinitely.

Rakshit Tandon, a prominent national-level cybersecurity expert, cautioned that this data is the ultimate target. "AI needs data and information to function accurately, and this is why different trends are being introduced—to make people use it so that AI gets data," Tandon told the media.

The Hidden Cost of Data Oversharing

The concern extends beyond just frivolous photo editing. People are increasingly using AI apps for professional tasks, seeking answers to personal questions, and even discussing private life problems, all of which is being cataloged. Tandon highlighted a worrying case where a content creator uploaded a picture of herself in a full-sleeve top for an AI transformation. The resulting retro image, however, showed her in a sleeveless top and even revealed a mole near her shoulder.

"AI does not scan through your clothes," Tandon explained. "The content creator must have earlier uploaded her picture on the AI in which the mole was visible, which is why in the latest transformed picture, the AI showed the mole." In an even more direct example, a person who had uploaded their passport to an AI application later asked the AI to reveal everything it knew about them. The AI's detailed response included a reference to the person's birthmark, which was mentioned on the passport.

"Therefore, we advise people not to share personal details with AI as it would keep them stored," Tandon stressed.

When AI Becomes a Therapist

The expert is particularly concerned about the trend of users treating AI as a trusted confidant, a habit he has observed in recent sessions with school children. "School-going children have started using AI as their therapists," Tandon revealed, noting that discussing personal issues with an AI is highly worrisome.

This over-reliance has led to tragic consequences abroad. Tandon cited an international case where a teenage boy, after discussing his personal issues and researching suicide methods with an AI, allegedly received "help" from the AI in ending his life, according to the boy's family.

Expert Advice: Use AI Wisely

Tandon's final advice to the public is clear and simple: Use AI as a professional tool only, and never overshare. "One can also follow the picture trends; however, never overshare. Moreover, do not share personal details or issues with AI," he concluded.
